We offer same-day tooth extraction and wisdom tooth removal services. Wisdom teeth often need to be removed, as leaving them untreated may lead to decay in the adjacent second molar. You are welcome to visit our dental clinic in Central, Hong Kong, and have your wisdom teeth removed in a comfortable setting. Book your appointment today.
In general, wisdom teeth do not always require extraction after they erupt. However, if they grow at an angle that presses against other teeth, or if they cause pain or gum inflammation, your dentist may recommend removing them. At Smith & Jain Dentists, our dentists can perform simple extractions. For more complex cases that involve bone removal, we will refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for surgical extraction.

Before the extraction begins, the dentist will numb the surrounding gum area with a local anaesthetic so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. For surgical extractions, the dentist will make a small incision in the gum near the tooth. If necessary, a portion of the surrounding bone may be removed before extracting the tooth.
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are located at the very back of the mouth and are the last teeth to erupt—typically between ages 17 and 25. If your wisdom tooth is growing within the jawbone or gums and causes pain, your dentist may recommend removing it.
Misaligned wisdom teeth may put pressure on adjacent teeth, leading to bite problems.
Furthermore, because the very back of the mouth is difficult to clean effectively, wisdom teeth are more prone to decay and gum infection. If extraction is required—especially for lower wisdom teeth—our oral surgeons can perform the procedure based on your specific needs.
In Hong Kong, the cost of wisdom teeth removal is not a standard flat fee. The pricing varies based on the complexity of the extraction, the tooth’s position, and your individual dental and bone structure. Since every wisdom tooth grows differently, the treatment approach and its associated costs are tailored to your specific clinical condition.
Fully erupted wisdom teeth are generally straightforward to remove. However, impacted or semi-impacted wisdom teeth require a surgical extraction—which involves gum reflection and sometimes minor bone removal—leading to higher complexity and costs.
Factors such as curved roots, proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve, or teeth deeply embedded in the bone require more clinical time and advanced surgical techniques to ensure safety.
Depending on the complexity of the surgery and patient comfort levels, the choice between local anesthesia, IV Sedation (Intravenous Sedation), or general anesthesia will influence the total treatment investment.
We invite you to schedule a comprehensive assessment with our surgical team. Our dentists will conduct a thorough examination and, if necessary, take X-rays or a 3D CT Scan to fully evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and assess any potential risks. We will provide a clear and transparent treatment plan along with a cost estimate, ensuring you are fully informed and comfortable before proceeding with the procedure.
Examination: The dentist will assess your mouth and take a panoramic X-ray to evaluate the position and condition of the wisdom teeth.
Discussion: The dentist will explain the need for extraction and discuss potential risks.
Local Anaesthesia: A numbing injection is given around the extraction site to ensure a painless procedure.
General Anaesthesia Option: For anxious or fearful patients, general anaesthesia is also available.
Follow-up care: You will receive wound-care instructions, pain medication guidance, and dietary advice.
Check-up: A review appointment is scheduled 7–14 days after extraction to assess healing and remove sutures if necessary.
Pericoronitis is an infection caused when there is insufficient space for a wisdom tooth to fully erupt. When part of the tooth erupts and the remaining portion is covered by gum tissue, food debris and bacteria may accumulate beneath the gum flap.
If the area becomes infected, symptoms of pericoronitis include red and swollen gums, bad breath, unpleasant taste, pus discharge near the tooth, swollen lymph nodes under the chin, jaw muscle spasms, and swelling in the affected area of the face.
Rinsing with warm salt water may help clear debris, but antibiotics and proper treatment by an oral surgeon are often required.
Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure. If the wisdom tooth has erupted above the gumline, your dentist or dental specialist (oral and maxillofacial surgeon) may recommend local anaesthesia. If the tooth is impacted, intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia may be suggested. Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons will recommend the most suitable anaesthesia option for your case.
