Teeth Whitening Cost

The cost of professional teeth whitening in Hong Kong depends on several individual factors, such as the type of staining, your desired shade of whiteness, and the whitening method chosen. Since an effective and safe whitening treatment is personalised to your starting tooth colour and goals, the total fee will vary from person to person.

How Much Does Whitening Cost in Hong Kong?

As every patient’s tooth composition and whitening goals are different, we cannot provide an exact price without an in-person consultation. The total cost depends on factors such as the number of sessions needed to achieve your desired result and whether you choose in-clinic power whitening or a take-home kit.

For reference, based on current market rates—such as the fee schedule from Prince Philip Dental Hospital—in-clinic bleaching generally ranges between HK$4,800 and HK$10,000 per session, while a custom-made bleaching guard for at-home use typically ranges from HK$2,800 to HK$6,000. This serves as an indicative guide to help you understand the typical pricing level for professional whitening in Hong Kong.

Factors That Affect the Cost

Type of Staining

Intrinsic (internal) stains may require a different approach and more sessions than extrinsic (surface) stains.

Whitening Method

Powerful, single-visit in-clinic whitening has a different cost structure than a more gradual take-home kit.

Desired Results & Sessions

The level of whitening achievable and the number of sessions required to reach your ideal shade will influence the overall investment.

Consultation & Treatment Planning

Book a consultation at Smith & Jain Dentists to receive a personalised teeth whitening plan. During your visit, our dentists will conduct a thorough examination of your tooth shade and enamel condition, discuss your aesthetic goals, and provide a detailed cost estimate for the most suitable whitening option for you—ensuring you have a clear and confident path to a brighter smile.

Two Teeth Whitening Options

We offer two professional teeth whitening options:

  • The first is a visit to your cosmetic dentistry office where you will spend about an hour in the chair and can significantly whiten your teeth without weeks of commitment.
  • The second method, usually paired with the first, is at-home treatments with custom dental trays. These should be used a few hours a day.

Compare Teeth Whitening Methods: Effectiveness, Cost, and Safety ->

1. Zoom! In-Office Whitening

The Zoom! In-office method for whitening teeth is very popular, reliable ,effective with clear results and can be done alone or along with nightly treatments at home.

Step 1: Preparatory Cleaning

When you come in for Zoom teeth whitening your appointment will likely start with a normal teeth cleaning to make sure your teeth are clear of all the calculus and stains.

Step 2: Gel Application and Light Activation

  • After your cleaning, the dentist will treat your teeth with a hydrogen peroxide whitening gel.

  • They will then apply a bright UV light.

  • The bleaching gel reacts to the UV light, intensifying the whitening effect, which is why the in-office procedure is so effective as a one-time treatment.

  • You will need to hold the light device between your teeth during this time.

Step 3: Repeated Treatment Cycles

  • After 15 minutes, your dentist will re-apply the gel.

  • They will re-apply the gel again after another 15 minutes.

  • This creates a total of 45 minutes of whitening treatment (three 15-minute cycles).

Step 4: Post-Treatment Sensitivity Management

Immediately after your treatment, your teeth will be treated with a sensitivity-reducing fluoride past-gel to manage the tooth sensitivity that is a common response to teeth whitening.

Key Benefits of Zoom Whitening:

  • Highly Effective: Can lighten teeth up to 8 shades in one session.
  • Fast Results: See a dramatically brighter smile the same day.
  • Long-Lasting: Results can last from 6 months to 2 years with proper care.
  • Safe & Controlled: Performed by our dentists to minimize sensitivity and protect your gums.

Note: This treatment is not suitable for everyone. Crowns, veneers, and composite fillings will not whiten and may need to be replaced after your natural teeth are lightened. We will advise you during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Whitening

How effective is blue light teeth whitening?

  • In-clinic treatment delivers dramatic results (2–8 shades lighter) in one visit.
  • At-home kits work gradually but are less potent.

Is blue light teeth whitening safe?

  • Yes, when performed by professionals.
  • Temporary teeth sensitivity and gum irritation are risks of whitening.

How long do results last?

  • 6 months to 2 years, depending on diet and oral hygiene.
  • Avoid smoking, coffee, and red wine to prolong whitening.

Are there side effects?

  • Common: Short-term tooth sensitivity or gum irritation.
  • Rare: Overuse can weaken enamel—follow dentist instructions.

What Teeth Whitening System Actually Works?

Several systems work, but effectiveness and safety vary significantly:

  • Dentist-Supervised Whitening (Most Effective & Safest):
    • In-Office Power Whitening: Uses high-concentration gel + special light/laser. Dramatic results in 60-90 minutes. Best for fast, significant whitening.
    • Professional Take-Home Kits: Custom trays + professional-strength gel. You wear trays for specified periods daily. Excellent results in 1-2 weeks. Ideal balance of effectiveness, safety, and control, especially for sensitive teeth.
  • Over-the-Counter (OTC) Products (Milder Results):
    • Whitening Strips: Can work for mild/moderate staining if used perfectly consistently. Lower concentration than professional kits.
    • Whitening Toothpastes: Remove surface stains only. Don’t change intrinsic tooth colour. Can be too abrasive for the teeth and gums.
    • Whitening Pens/Mouthwashes: Offer minimal, temporary brightening, best for touch-ups.
  • Avoid: Unregulated online products, “natural” remedies like charcoal (abrasive!), beauty salon whitening (illegal & unsafe in HK).

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Teeth whitening uses peroxide-based bleaching agents (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These gels penetrate the porous enamel and break down the large, dark-coloured stain molecules (chromogens) into smaller, colourless fragments. This process lightens the overall tooth shade.

How is Teeth Whitening Done?

  • In-Office Professional Whitening (e.g. Phillips Zoom! In-Chair Whitening):
    1. Gums protected with a barrier.
    2. High-concentration whitening gel applied.
    3. Gel often activated by light/laser.
    4. Process repeated in intervals (~60-90 mins total).
    5. Results visible immediately.
  • Professional Take-Home Kits (e.g. OpalescenceTM  PF):
    1. Impressions taken for custom trays.
    2. Provided with high-concentration professional gel syringes.
    3. Wear trays with gel daily/overnight as directed (1-2 weeks).
  • OTC Whitening Strips:
    1. Apply plastic strips (coated with gel) to teeth.
    2. Wear for time per instructions (e.g., 30 mins 2x daily for 1-2 weeks).
  • OTC Whitening Pens:
    1. Twist pen to dispense gel onto brush/applicator.
    2. Paint gel onto teeth, leave on (saliva often washes it away quickly).

What Can Teeth Whitening Do?

  • Effectively lighten extrinsic stains from food/drinks (tea, coffee, red wine, curry), tobacco, and some surface medications.
  • Lighten some intrinsic stains (mild age-related yellowing, slight fluorosis).
  • Brighten your smile by several shades.
  • It does NOT: Change restoration colour (crowns, veneers, fillings), make teeth unnaturally “white” beyond their potential, fix chips/cracks/decay, or whiten exposed roots or dead teeth.
